Recently we carried out a programme of concrete scanning using the Hilti Ferroscan for a large steel fabrication company at the new Crossrail station at Paddington, London. Crossrail is a 118-kilometre railway line under development in London and the home counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex, England. The central section and a large portion of the line, between Paddington in central London and Abbey Wood in the south-east, is due to open in December 2018.
The client was erecting steel fabricated stairs and balustrades. The client wanted to ensure that they did not compromise the integrity of the existing structure by striking the reinforcements in the concrete. We used the Ferroscan to accurately locate the reinforcement in the slab and then produce a CAD drawing detailing the reinforcement. This enabled the client to design the fixing points for the balustrade in a way that would avoid striking and reducing the cover to the steel reinforcement.
We carried out CBR Plate Testing and Incremental Plate Testing recently for a client in Finchley, London. We helped the client prove that the construction of the piling mat that they had installed was safe for the intended use. The results were issued instantly on site for the client, enabling them to continue with construction.
Recently, our team carried out a project in Old Street, London. There, they used the Hilti Ferroscan to determine the reinforcement in the concrete elements of the structure and extracted core samples to test for the compressive strength of the concrete. A comprehensive report was issued within 2 days to the client. This report enabled the client to evaluate whether the building structure was suitable for the construction/addition of a further 2 storeys.
